Interested in aging gracefully? Learn the rare longevity exercises of Sun Simiao

More than 1,300 years ago, a legendary physician of the Tang Dynasty developed a series of simple yet profound practices to preserve health and extend life. His name was Sun Simiao, often called the “King of Medicine” in China.

A physician, philosopher, and Daoist practitioner, Sun Simiao dedicated part of his medical writings to longevity methods designed to nourish life, prevent disease, and cultivate vitality. These teachings were recorded in classical Chinese texts that explored what is called yangsheng — the art of nurturing life or yangxing– the art of nurturing nature.

For centuries, these teachings were passed down quietly within Chinese medical and Daoist traditions. Yet today, they remain largely unknown in the Western world.

Sun Simiao Longevity Exercises

A rare teaching in English

One reason these exercises are so little known is simple:they are extremely difficult to access in English. Sun Simiao’s original teachings were written in classical Chinese, a literary language very different from modern Mandarin. Translating these texts requires not only linguistic expertise but also a deep understanding of Chinese medicine, Daoist philosophy, and historical context.

As a result, only fragments of his health-preserving teachings have been translated, and they often appear scattered across academic texts, medical discussions, or specialized courses. Even when translated, they are rarely taught as a living practice.

Most people in the West encounter Chinese longevity practices through modern qigong systems or simplified routines. The original methods attributed to Sun Simiao are far less common.
Finding them explained clearly is rare. Finding them demonstrated and taught in a guided way is even rarer.

Simple movements with profound purpose

One of the remarkable aspects of Sun Simiao’s longevity practices is their simplicity. Many of the movements are small, accessible, and easy to integrate into daily life. They include practices such as gentle head movements, abdominal massage, joint rotations, breathing techniques, etc.

But behind these simple gestures lies a deep philosophy of health. In traditional Chinese medicine, the goal is not merely to treat illness but to maintain balance within the body and mind. Sun Simiao believed that cultivating this balance could prevent disease and support long life.

His practices were designed to:

    • Encourage the smooth circulation of the Qi
    • Maintain mobility in the joints and spine
    • Support digestion and internal organ function
    • Calm the mind and regulate emotions
    • Strengthen resilience as the body ages

Longevity through daily practice

What makes Sun Simiao’s teachings especially powerful is that they are not extreme practices. They do not require athletic ability, complicated choreography and they can be practiced gently, even by older adults. The key lies in consistency.

The movements stimulate circulation, encourage the flow of energy through the channels, and gently awaken the body’s natural capacity to heal and maintain itself. In traditional Chinese health philosophy, longevity is not achieved through occasional intense effort, but through small daily practices that accumulate over time.

A bridge between ancient wisdom and modern life

Although these teachings originate in the 7th century, their principles align surprisingly well with modern understandings of health. Today we know that gentle movement, breathing regulation, and stress reduction can:

  • Improve circulation
  • Maintain muscle mass
  • Support joint mobility, coordination and balance
  • Reduce chronic stress
  • Enhance sleep and mental clarity
  • Support healthy aging

Sun Simiao understood these principles long before modern science began to confirm them. His longevity exercises represent a complete philosophy of preventative health — one that sees the body, mind, and breath as inseparable.

Why learning from a teacher matters

Another reason these practices are rarely experienced in their true form is that written instructions alone are not enough.

Like many traditional Chinese practices, the movements carry subtle details:

  • Posture
  • Breathing rhythm
  • Energetic intention
  • Pacing
  • Transition between exercises

Without guidance, these elements can easily be misunderstood or lost. Learning the exercises with demonstration allows practitioners to experience how the movements are meant to feel, not just how they look. This transforms them from simple stretches into a genuine longevity practice.
