Hi everyone, thanks for taking the time to check out this website. My name is Ethan Murchie, I’m the founder of the Living Neijing Project. The project is a result of the profound affect the Huangdi Neijing has had on my life and my desire to share this goodness and make it accessible to as many people as possible.
I believe that the teachings of Neijing science have a potential to make incredible contributions to the reduction of suffering and optimization of well being for people all over the world. Even more, at the risk of sounding truly grandiose I feel that the Neijing story holds invaluable clues to the solutions we are seeking to our collective challenge of coming together to construct a sustainable global civilization.
The Neijing tells a story of life as a continuous intimately connected unity of constant process. We are inseparable from the environment around us, our environment spans the the largest movements of the solar system and the galaxy beyond to the smallest movements of the atoms in our bodies. The outer forms we interact with, solid and real as they may be, are the residue of the inner processes of change and transformation. To recognize the inner processes and the principles that guide them allows individuals to thrive and societies to be governed in life optimizing ways.
Our Mission
The mission of the Living Neijing Academy is to:
- To use physical culture to make the teachings of the Huang Di Neijing accessible to more people, especially to people who are not acupuncturist and people who are not Chinese medicine professionals
- To contribute to the spread of appreciation for this marvellous teaching at the heart of Chinese medicine
- To promote the use of the Neijing teachings as a tool for the organization of living systems and the reduction of suffering
- To strengthen the grassroots practice of Chinese medicine
- To participate, through the above activities, in the evolution of solutions to the great challenges facing humanity today
Lineage
What ever I am able to transmit and what ever good I am able to achieve is only possible because of my Teachers.
Vince Black
Vince was a xingyi boxer, a doctor of Chinese medicine, a Sufi and a dedicated teacher of superb skill. The breadth and depth of his knowledge and ability was incredible. He taught me how to think and how to learn, how to observe and how to act. I followed him for 24 years and feel very sincerely that I owe my life to him.
Vince taught us that experience is worth much more than words. The boxing traditions of xingyi quan, bagua zhang and taiji quan were designed by people who were doctors of Chinese medicine as well as boxers. They built the Neijing principles into the physical culture methods of both boxing and nourishing life skills. A person does not need to know a lot of words and theories to live the principles, they only need to practice. If one practices the words and principles will have meaning and be worth something. A person who only has words and principles but no practice will be empty. This is the fundamental teaching I strive to bring to my Neijing studies and research.
Dr Van Nghi
Dr Nguyen Van Nghi was one of the great Neijing scholars of the 20th century. He came from France to Vince’s house in Arizona in 1999 when he was 90 years old and taught us about the Neijing. He said, “how can you call yourself a practitioner of Chinese medicine if you don’t read the Neijing?” his energy and drive are the inspiration that pointed me in the direction I am still going today.
Dr Li Ding
Dr Li developed Jingluo Qigong. I was lucky enough to study directly with him from 2014 until his passing in 2023. He expressed the Neijing teachings in the way he lived and in his simple straight forward speech. His qigong method is an incredible expression of Neijing teaching put into practice.
Li Runxi
Li Runxi was the son of my teachers teacher. He taught us xingyi quan and through his example more about patience and perseverance that I thought possible to know. It was through his lectures and writings on xingyi quan that I first found the solid confirmation that xingyi quan is built on a Neijing foundation.
Liu Shuheng
Liu Shuheng is my teachers great gongfu brother. He taught us Cheng School Gao Style Bagua Zhang and through him I have learnt very much about Chinese culture and the wisdom of wude 武德 martial virtue.
Liang Dehua
Liang Dehua is a taiji quan teacher in the Yang family tradition of Yang Shaohou and Gu Lisheng. He is exceptional in his willingness to openly share the traditional art and culture of taiji quan. Through him I have found many doors open that previously had been closed despite much effort on both sides to breach the gap of language and culture between modern American and traditional China.
The North American Tang Shou Tao Association
The practice that brings the teachings in an old book to life can not be achieved alone, it is a cultural activity and requires all the interaction, support and challenge that comes from working together with teachers, with peers and with students. For me this has been achieved over the past 25 or more years with my friends, comrades and students in the North American Tang Shou Tao Association. In remembering the well from which I drink I will never forget all of the people who have contributed over the years.
